Dfest is next weekend in Tulsa and I'm getting excited! When I first saw the lineup I was pretty disappointed because last year there were a lot more bands I knew playing, but I have spent the last week listening to some of these bands and finding some good stuff. I'm definitely going to see Citizen Cope, I've had that song on repeat for days now. I'm also really digging on Mates of States new album and I'm going to try to catch them too. Well hell, here's my tentative schedule:

Friday:

Carney 7pm
Delta Spirit 8pm
Ozomatli 8:30pm
Citizen Cope 9pm
Ian Moore 9:10 pm
Gorgol Bordello 10:30 pm

Saturday:
Mates of States 7pm
Ra Ra Riot 7pm
Metro Station (yeah, I know) 10pm
Cake 11:30 pm

yes, I'm double booked there, I know. I'm going to have to see Citizen Cope, though, and Ian Moore plays Tulsa all the time. I'm also sad that I might miss Ra Ra Riot, but Mates of State are just too awesome to miss.

Anyone else going? I'm going with a friend this year, but if there are any LJer's going who would like to meet up to say hi, please drop me a line. I live very close to the Blue Dome district, so we will be taking breaks from the heat and crowds and relaxing in between sets. I love meeting new people, especially fellow fans!

I had a blast at this show. It was one of my favorite shows ever, without a doubt. I loved being in the pit for once, I always miss these tickets. I'm going to try harder to get pit tickets from here on out. It was worth it. Yes you get pushed around and it's hot and people spill things on you and let's not even go into the wide variety of smells you experience in a pit. Pete Wentz was standing right fucking there! It was worth it to see faces on stage and to be able to make out facial expressions. I loved it. The crowd was kind of small, and it didn't get too shovey. I managed to keep my spot for most of the show by planting my feet and shoving back.

Just an FYI for people like me who get frustrated at all the tiny merch shirts. I got the gray long sleeved hoodie with the What a Catch Donnie single artwork on it in an extra large size and it not only fits me it is kind of roomie (I'm a size 18/20).

I saw the guy who tried to take Pete's Midtown bracelet. I thought the guy was trying to pull Pete down into the crowd, but now I know he was trying to pull the bracelet off. It was during Saturday, of course, when Pete tries to high five the people in the pit. I could see the guy had both hands around Pete's wrist and the security guy holding onto Pete was cussing and holding on for dear life. Pete was trying to pull his arm back and still high five people on the other side.

Lots of fun stuff happened between Pete and Patrick but I don't know if I got any of it. Mostly I was taping songs and the interaction stuff between songs I missed. They did do the box step thing where they dance together. It was cute. Once when Patrick was talking about something, Pete pulled his own shirt up and rubbed his bare chest against Patrick's back. Patrick totally ignored him, of course.

I'm so glad I got to go to this! I wish I could go to another date.

I read this really amazing story last night, which is all about Brendon finding a new family and it was awesome. I stayed up really late reading because I just had to finish. I haven't read the first part, which is all about MCR as street kids adopted by Brian, but the kid versions of MCR are so adorable I'm going to read it even though I don't know enough about MCR to be reading fic about them. I mean I love The Black Parade and LOTMS, I just haven't reached that point of obsessiveness about them where I watch tons of videos and read interviews, etc. I just enjoy their music. But oh man. I can feel it creeping up.

But since I haven't read the first part of the story I am missing big chunks of backstory and my brain did that weird hiccup thing that happens to me sometimes when I read something that's not finished or resolved in some way. I basically dreamed about Frank and Gerard all night long. I kept waking up, because I don't sleep well when I mess up my sleep routine even the slightest and I stayed up way too late last night. And every time I woke up I was dreaming of Frank. I don't even know enough about him to dream about him WTF brain? I guess I just made shit up.

Anyway. I'm going to try to go to the Dallas, TX Fall Out Boy date. It's looking good, I got the time off approved (it's only one day, thank god the concert is on a Friday for once!) and it doesn't interfere with school, and my friend and her daughter are going with me so I don't have to drive alone. I'm excited! I never thought I'd get to see FOB live, they haven't played anything but secret shows since I started following bandom. I know this is a long shot, I'm the only gay eskimo in my tribe, but if anyone is going to this date and wants to say hey, give me a comment.

It's been a weird couple of days in bandom. On the one hand we have Spencer Smith talking to Out magazine and saying things like:

people thought we were gay, especially Brendon -- which may be true. Undetermined at this point. He doesn’t have a wife, so… And on the second album, they thought we were gay, but like gay hippies with beards.

Which is completely awesome. I think he's taking a swipe at Pete Wentz (who must be straight, he's married, right? LOL) He also says some very cool stuff about Prop 8 (bullshit!).

But on the other hand we have a girl putting up pics on her twitter of Brendon hanging out with some girls after some event and an anonymouse saying Brendon's girlfriend is pissed now. Wut?

Of course the other eyewitness says Brendon hung out with Shane all night, which is the story I choose to believe *shiny shiny tinhat*

The most important thing about that article in Out is that Spencer recommended Dr. Dog's album Fate, which is pretty fucking sweet and I love it a whole lot. Go find it, it's awesome!

Got tickets to see The Flaming Lips in OKC for New Year's Eve! I'm pretty excited about that.

Panic and Rockband Live in Dallas repost
spencer brendon 1 by [info]sniperhearts
[info]fangrrl
(I apologize to those of you who have already seen this. I added all the videos I took, and they have sound now, and I wanted it all in one post before I shared the link far and wide.)

This is my third time seeing Panic live and it was by far the best show I've seen them do. Unbelievable. I had really excellent seats. The Nokia in Grand Prairie is exactly the right size for this show. The Scott Trade Center in St. Louis was just too big and it wasn't full and like I mentioned before, stupid ticketmaster didn't fill the front center seats first, they tried to fill up the sides first for some fucked up reason. Gah. Anyway. ALL the seats in the Nokia face front and center which is as it should be. No one wants to sit facing the side of the stage.

Anyway. I had a great seat and I could see all the animation I missed last time and I just enjoyed it so much more. I thought The Cab sounded really good. I'm still underwhelmed by The Plain White Ts, but Dashboard Confessional was pretty good. My friend loved them, they totally have a new fan now.

Went to the Northern Downpour meet and greet before the show. There were a ton of people for this one. And the room they shoved us in was so tiny. Wall to Wall people.

The meet and greet room was very small and it was hard to move everyone around in there, but it was pretty much like the last one. One thing signed and one picture. One woman gave Brendon a coonskin cap, because he's in Texas and he has to have a coonskin cap. He very graciously put it on and wore it for most the rest of the pics. Brendon immediately starting singing the Davy Crockett song (Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier) and good lord, you never heard a room full of chatter quiet down so fast. It was pretty funny. You could tell he wasn't putting much effort into it, he was just messing around but it was so loud! His voice projected into this tiny little room and wow. LOUD.

Everybody Panic!

[info]fangrrl
Cobra Starship is tomorrow here in Tulsa and I won meet and greet tickets! I feel kind of heartless, since Gabe is obviously sick and shouldn't be singing at all, but he decided to continue the tour so I'm going. I'm very excited about meeting them. I'm going to tell Ryland and Alex how much I adore This is Ivy League, too. I love that album so freaking much.

I also just found out that I won meet and greet for Panic next week in Dallas! I'm starting to think it's not so much a "winning" of a contest, and more that they are just trying to accommodate everyone who signs up, but I don't even care! I'll get to see my boys up close again and put my arm around Brendon and hopefully Spencer this time and I'm just all atwitter! Maybe this time I won't be too excited to check out Brendon's ass, because I totally didn't even look last time!

Waited an hour to vote, which has never happened to me before. Unbelievable turn out and I hope that means a landslide for Obama! I have little hope for Oklahoma to vote for Obama, but I feel honored to have been a part of this historic day, regardless.

Panic in St. Louis
northern downpour by makesomelove
[info]fangrrl
So my Panic show was tonight in St. Louis. It is a looooong drive from Tulsa. But St. Louis is lovely:

My sister snapped that pic out of the window of my car on the way to the Scottrade Center.

We got there at 4:00pm because that's what the email from Northern Downpour said. Turns out there were three different meet and greets going on at different times and the ND one didn't start until 6pm. At one point we saw the guys going to the other meet and greet and they waved at us. Girls cried. When they were finished they walked back by again and Brendon had a Halloween mask on and was jumping around like a monkey.

Zack gave us sparkly green wrist bands, marched us single file up the escalator then gave us the 'don't be creepy' speech. I was at the front of the line and talked to Zack a couple of times and walked right next to him. I had this moment when the guys first came out of 'wow, they are actually real!' They are also very very tiny. I know you already know this, but seriously. They are itty bitty boys.

Like I said I was first in line. I had tried to think of something to say or ask, but I couldn't think of anything that wasn't stupid, so I just said hi. Brendon was first, then Spencer, Ryan and Jon. I had them sign my Pretty.Odd CD booklet, which I ordered from the FBR store way back when. I didn't realize there was anything unusual about it, but it's green. Apparently that's a special edition and every single one of them commented on it. I had no idea they weren't all green LOL Ryan said it was a special edition and Jon asked me if I left it out in the sun. I said no, it was just green. He said wouldn't it be cool if it was, if it changed colors when you left it out in the sun? I laughed and said yeah, that would be cool. And that was it, end of the line.

The line started back over again with me for pictures. A security guard followed me until we were back up to Zack and the table where the guys were sitting. Zack took my camera and I turned towards the guys and Brendon turned to me and gave me the biggest smile, like, are you ready? I'm sure I turned red, but I just moved over to stand between Brendon and Ryan. Zack already said we could put our arms around them if it felt natural to take the pic that way, just don't grope anyone. Before I could do anything Brendon had his arm around me and so did Ryan so I just put my arms around them, too. Zack took the pic and a professional photographer took a pic at the same time and messed up my flash, so Zack took a second pic. The second one turned out fantastic, and is much better than the first one, so thank you mysterious photographer!

Don't have much to report
brendon smooch by makesomelove

So concerts! I didn't make it to Shwayze, alas. I went but only saw the opening bands and left right before Shwayze came on, for reasons that don't need explaining at this juncture. I'm disappointed, but they'll be back through I'm sure.

My first Panic date is next Sunday the 19th in St. Louis! And I won meet and greet tickets! I'm alternating between astonished excitement and weird squirmy terror. I'm not so sure I want to do this, but I'm sure I'll regret it if I don't, so I guess I'm going to go. I know it's going to be weird. I'll be the oldest person there, and I look like someone's mom, not a Panic fan, but OH WELL. I've been dealing with that feeling all year going to live shows, it hasn't stopped me yet. I'm very excited that I will get to hear Zack's 'don't be creepy' speech for myself.

The Cab
pete wentz by impish_icons
[info]fangrrl
The Cab canceled their show tonight in Tulsa and I'm so fucking disappointed.

The openers moved to The Gypsy Coffeehouse and played short acoustic sets. Hey Monday, Rocket to the Moon and This Providence all played about four songs each.

I don't know these three bands very well, but I can tell you that Hey Monday played Homecoming, and Rocket to the Moon played Dakota. I thought This Providence was fucking awesome and the singer is completely gorgeous. I swooned every time we made eye contact, I swear. I loved their songs and will be checking them out.

The Cab was there, hanging out. I didn't talk to any of them, but I could have. Marshall played the piano while Hey Monday was setting up.Ian was sitting on the floor right across from me during Hey Monday's set and Singer stood right next to me for most of This Providence's set. And I saw Cash and Johnson by their van outside the Marquee.

It was kind of a cool time, and I will never again be around that many Decaydance/FBR folks all at once, that's for sure. Everyone from all four bands was hanging out. Some people took pictures but it was very low key. The Gypsy is a tiny little place and there was maybe a hundred people in there (ETA: my friend who went with me says I'm completely delusional, the Gypsy doesn't hold a hundred people, it was more like 50.) I was right in front of the bands, dead center on the couches. A few people sat in front of us on the floor, but seriously I could not have had a better view.

I wish The Cab had played, even just a couple of acoustic songs like the other bands did. I'm really disappointed that I didn't get to see them play. I'm gonna go cry in my beer.

ETA: My pictures, but don't get too excited. My phone takes shitty pictures and it was dark in there. Sorry sorry.

FOB Mixtape
Cobra Starship group by misery_passion
[info]fangrrl
The mixtape. Wow, what did we do to deserve such an awesome gift? I love Lake Effect Kid like burning, in fact all the snippets of FOB songs are interesting and good. And my love for Cobra Starship just reached epic levels, and I didn't think it was possible to love their stupid faces more than I already do. I'm dying to know if Cobra Starship is really going to make a video of I Kissed a Boy and more importantly, are they going to perform it live on tour this fall? with boy kissing

The other big thing is the track Nearly Witches. It's obviously Brendon singing, and if Ryan Ross didn't write those lyrics I'll eat my shoes. I've seen a lot of discussion about this track and a lot of Panic fans feel like it is one of the scrapped songs from the cabin. I'm not so sure about that. It does sound similar to the bits you hear on the making of Pretty. Odd. But the mixtape listing doesn't say it's by Panic at the Disco, it says Paul Revere Jumpsuit Apparatus. There is a band called Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and according to their wikipedia page, they toured with My Chemical Romance in 2007, so I'm probably the only one who doesn't already know about this band, but I've never heard of them. But I think that name is just too random to be a complete coincidence. So maybe it is some of the members of Panic performing with some of the members of this other group, which, by the way, seems to be defunct. So I don't know. It's weird. Also, I don't think that is Spencer drumming on Nearly Witches.

ETA: Pete said on his latest blogspot (via Icecreamheadaches): "3. no one really knows the identity of all the members of the paul revere jumpsuit apparatus or what their current status is." the plot thickens!

It is also possible that I'm completely wrong and missing something obvious. Please school me if you know something I don't.

Going to Dfest tonight! Definitely planning on catching All-American Rejects, Paramore and Phantom Planet on the main stage. I'd like to check out Congress of a Crow, moe., Disco Biscuits, Ghostland Observatory, Admiral Twin (I went to school with the drummer, but they were called the Melodramatic Wallflowers back then), The Apples in Stereo and Edison Glass. I probably won't make all of those, but I'm going to try!

Tomorrow looks awesome too. The Roots, AM, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Crocodile, Zappa Plays Zappa and a bunch of others. But The Roots, man The Roots!

Need to find my sunscreen before I head out!
